This land is considered sacred.
Here, one can always feel a gentle, luminous energy —

an energy of purity, love, and protection.

Naggar is one of the oldest settlements in the Kullu Valley.
Surrounded by cedar forests and majestic mountains, it has preserved the atmosphere of authentic India — peaceful, spiritual, and profound. It is a place where sages once lived, where yogis meditated, and where mantras are still chanted, pujas are performed, and ancient traditions remain alive today.
Yoga Dham Ashram is located on the sacred hill of Thawa — a place of spiritual power that for centuries has drawn yogis, travelers, and seekers of the inner path.
A VILLAGE OF SAGES, ARTISTS & ANCIENT YOGIC TRADITIONS
The Story of Naggar —
A Sacred Place
The History of Naggar
For centuries, Brahmins, sages, and pilgrims have lived here. Narrow lanes, ancient temples, and traditional wooden houses — everything here breathes history. According to local tradition, great rishis practiced tapasya in these mountains, and the land around Naggar is blessed by the presence of many deities.

Today, Naggar remains an oasis of peace and purity. Life moves slowly here, traditions are still preserved, and travelers find space to reflect on the deeper questions of life.
Naggar was the capital of the Kullu kings for nearly 1,400 years. It is one of the oldest and most spiritually powerful places in the Himalayas.
The Roerich House
Today, his former home is a museum, and the renowned Urusvati Himalayan Research Institute, founded by the Roerich family to study the Himalayas, yoga, Tibetan medicine, and Indian culture, is located here as well. Roerich believed that he had found the mysterious Shambhala in this region.
This place remains an important part of the spiritual heritage connecting Russia and India.
In the early 20th century, Russian philosopher, artist, and explorer Nicholas Roerich came to Naggar.
The Roerich House still preserves an atmosphere of seeking light, truth, and beauty.
Here you can:
• see paintings by Nicholas and Svetoslav Roerich;
• visit the grave of Nicholas Roerich;
• take a walk through the garden cultivated by the artist;
• connect with the history of this remarkable family.

The Roerich House is one of the main places of interest for visitors to Naggar.
The Legend of Thawa Temple
According to legend, Lord Krishna meditated here, praying to God to bless his wife Satyabhama with a beautiful son. This land is considered sacred, and a gentle yet vibrant energy can always be felt here — an energy of purity, love, and protection.

The temple remains active to this day. Every morning and evening, pujas are performed, mantras are chanted, and the sacred fire is lit.

Yoga Dham Ashram is located beside this sacred place. Many of our guests say that the atmosphere of the temple becomes one of the most meaningful experiences of their journey.
On the hill above Naggar stands an ancient Krishna Temple, believed to be around 5,000 years old.
The people who make this place special:
For generations, the Krishna Temple on Thawa Hill has been cared for by the Acharya family — a Brahmin lineage that served the kings of Kullu for more than a thousand years and has preserved the Vedic traditions.
The Acharya Family —
Guardians of the Temple and Tradition
Vidhyavati Acharya — wife of the pujari and mother of seven children. She welcomes every guest as a member of the family, cooks, cares for the temple, and teaches guests about the traditional way of life in the ashram.
Shri Jai Dev Acharya — hereditary yogi, chief pujari (temple priest), and spiritual adviser to the local community. His family has been connected with the temple and its service for centuries.
While staying at the ashram, you become part of a traditional Indian family, where respect, kindness, and sincerity are deeply valued.
The Acharya family — the heart of this place.
Our Team
